Hopefully, you’ve been able to save the date of July 26, 2014 for our annual picnic, because we have a real treat in store for you. WPW club member Al Zamba and his wife Mary have once again graciously and generously offered us the use of their beautiful grounds for our picnic. In addition to a nice grassy area to sit and enjoy the sun or shade, there is a building for cover if the weather turns against us. Our “program” for the day will be a tour of the Zamba’s fabulous collection of music boxes and antique cars, all lovingly restored. These completely divergent collections are housed in different buildings and are two separate “events,” so there’s plenty to see. Even if you think you don’t like “old cars,” or music boxes, you’ll like these, and the stories that go with them!
The club will provide typical picnic fare of hot dogs, hamburgers, and hot sausage; cold drinks of lemonade, iced tea, and bottled water; and all the extras like plates, cups, napkins, utensils, condiments, etc. If you would like something else to drink such as pop, beer, or wine, please feel free to bring your own.
To supplement the club’s catered food, we are asking each club member to bring a hot or cold dish to share (only one per family). This should be something small, being able to serve about 6-8 people. You can make it, or buy it, and it doesn’t need to be fancy. In order to minimize duplication (to be sure that we don’t end with 1000 brownies and no cole slaw!), please try to adhere to the following guidelines. Of course, no one is going to be checking dishes against your ID, so if you have a favorite family recipe, we’ll gladly look the other way. We also realize that one person’s appetizer is another person’s side dish (chips are a side dish, unless they are served with beer in which case they are a main course, right?), so don’t get too hung up on what we call stuff. Anyway, here’s our suggestion:
If your last name starts with A thru H, please bring an appetizer.
If your last name starts with I thru P, please bring a side dish.
If your last name starts with Q thru Z, please bring a dessert.
While there are tables and chairs in the Zamba’s facilities, it would probably be a good idea to bring your own folding chairs to set up wherever it feels right to you. And yard games like ladder golf, corn hole, etc. (no waterstone-sharpened Jarts, please!) are welcomed.
We are looking forward to seeing you there, and please feel free to bring your spouse or significant other. Children are also welcome, although the collections are not kid-friendly, so please be mindful of that. The picnic starts at 11:00 AM, and the hot food will be ready about noon. The Zamba’s address is:, and their phone if you get lost. The address shows up in the map function of my iPhone and in Google Maps. Written directions are at the end of this email, and the club will try to post some signs at key intersections.
So that we can plan with the caterer, it is really important that you RSVP to Mike Silverman no later than Sunday, July 20. If you have a last-minute change of plans and show up without having RSVP’d, we’re not going to turn you away, but why not email Mike RIGHT NOW, while you’re thinking about it. A late RSVP is better than none at all, but please try to help the committee plan for this event.
Looking forward to seeing you,
Your WPW Picnic Committee
