Meeting Agenda

Meeting Date: February 13, 2016

Meeting Start Time: 10:00 AM

Mike Long will be doing a program on finishing. Mike will present material about varnish and lacquers. His technique is brushing both materials. Mike will also show how to make your own varnish (not to be confused with shellac). This will be part 1 of 2 programs that Mike will present.

Meeting will review 7 common wood topcoats, including shellac, oils, varnish, lacquer, and more. The discussion will study how formulations have evolved to high solids from the previous, easier to use, low solids formulas. The discussion will include EPA/State driven regulations that resulted in chemical formula changes. You will increase your understanding of how you can improve performance, and you will learn how to mix your own varnish.

Mike Long is a self taught furniture maker and finisher with over 30 years of hands on experience. Mike operates his own business, Long’s Furniture and Design and routinely consults on finish issues. Mike is also an instructor at Back Channel School of Woodworking in McKees Rocks, PA.

  • His furniture repair class starts 3/7
  • Furniture touch-up starts 3/21
  • Intro to Finish starts 5/9

All classes held at Dante’s school, The Back Channel School of Woodworking.
