Jonathan Shapiro is going to do a presentation on sculpture. Jonathan is a well known Pittsburgh and national sculpture (wood) mostly.
Our speaker will be Jonathan Shapiro, a Pittsburgh-based artist in many mediums, including wood sculpture. Jonathan likes to think of himself as being a “lifelong artist,” having been exposed to art in many forms by his mother, also an artist. He has always looked to combine different mediums and styles into assembled sculpture, and has been including carved wood since about 1999.
Jonathan will begin his program in our normal meeting place with a talk about his history/work, techniques, and what inspires him, as well as a photographic presentation of some of his body of work. After the talk and photos, we will walk across the street to his studio where we can view some in-process work, and Jonathan will demonstrate some of the techniques that he uses to carve and sculpt wood, as well as the simple techniques that he uses to sharpen his tools.
Jonathan is also going to be teaching a wood sculpture class at Touchstone this summer, so we thought that this program could be a good opportunity for you to see if Jonathan’s work might tempt you to take the class.
